Responsibilities
Senior professional responsible for the end-to-end implementation and migration of APIs in Kong Gateway, focusing on custom plugin development in Lua, APIs deployment pipeline, configuration of various Kong types and scenarios, and the use of AI (MCP, StackSpot AI/GitHub Copilot) as an accelerator for engineering work. Works on both migrating APIs from Axway and implementing new APIs directly in Kong, always following the standards and configuration scenarios already defined by the Client - covering everything from route and service definition to the creation of custom Lua plugins and the deployment pipeline that supports the APIs lifecycle.
- Implement, configure, and migrate APIs in Kong Gateway (routes, services, upstreams, consumers), following the standards already defined by the Client.
- Migrate APIs from Axway to Kong, including rewriting policies in Lua when necessary.
- Develop custom Lua plugins for specific client needs (authentication, transformation, validation, routing, rate limiting) not covered by Kong's native plugins, adhering to established technical standards.
- Configure and maintain the APIs deployment pipeline (CI/CD) in Kong, including automation of publication, versioning, and configuration rollback.
- Configure Kong in the various types and scenarios already defined by the Client (hybrid mode, DB-less, multi-environment), applying the correct scenario to each API
- Utilize MCP (Model Context Protocol) and AI tools approved by the Client (StackSpot AI, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development, declarative configuration generation (deck), and Lua code analysis/review.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting of plugins, policies, and configuration scenarios in production.
- Apply the best practices for Kong configuration versioning and deployment (GitOps/decK) already adopted by the Client.
- Provide technical support to other assigned professionals (API Developer, Testing, DevOps) on Kong configuration, migration, and plugin issues.
Suggested List (not exhaustive) of Deliverables
- APIs implemented, migrated, and configured in Kong Gateway, ready for production, in compliance with Client standards.
- Custom Lua plugins developed, tested, and documented.
- APIs deployment pipeline ( CI/CD pipeline) implemented and documented.
- Declarative configuration (decK/YAML) versioned by API/environment/scenario.
- Technical documentation for each plugin, applied configuration scenario, and migration performed.
- Reports on AI/MCP usage in the process (traceability of acceleration, as per practice already used in the project).
Mandatory Requirements
- Solid experience with Kong Gateway.
- Experience with API Gateway / API Management.
- Hands-on experience with Lua plugin development or customization.
- Experience with implementation, configuration, and migration of APIs.
- Knowledge of concepts such as Routes, Services, Upstreams, and Consumers.
- Experience with CI/CD and deployment automation.
- Experience with Git and GitOps practices.
- Knowledge of decK and declarative configuration/YAML.
- Experience with troubleshooting APIs and integrations.
- Knowledge of multi-environment configurations and environments.
- Experience with APIs REST and integration concepts.
- Knowledge of AWS, especially services related to APIs, infrastructure, and DevOps.
- Technical English for reading and understanding documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Axway to Kong migration.
- Experience with other API Management products, such as Apigee, WSO2, MuleSoft, or IBM API Connect.
- Knowledge of AWS API Gateway.
- Experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes.
- Experience with Kong's Hybrid and DB-less architecture.
- Knowledge of automation and infrastructure as code.
- Experience with AI tools applied to software engineering.
- Knowledge of MCP (Model Context Protocol).
- Experience with GitHub Copilot and/or StackSpot AI.
